Abandoned in Adair County: Ghost Towns, Train Stations and Post Offices of the Past.

Dave Baker from The 29th State will be talking about the towns and communities which no longer appear on the maps. Ghost towns, railroads, and historical sites in Adair County will all be covered.

Dave Baker from The 29th State will be visiting and teaching about the towns and communities which no longer appear on the maps. Come learn how the Civil War, railroads, and the American West shaped Adair County. We will also discuss what ghost towns are, how to find them, and how to use them to better understand the world around us.

Dave Baker began photographing the state of Iowa in 2010 and has taken pictures of over 10,000 communities, villages, landmarks and historical sites.

The program will be presented in three parts. The first, will be a brief history of The 29th State Iowa history project. We will discuss what a ghost town is, how they came to be and why they are important to understanding our history. After this we will briefly discuss extant communities and why they survived while others did not. This will also include a brief history of Orient. Using maps and newspaper records we will briefly trace the communities of Adair, Bridgwater, Casey, Fontanelle, Greenfield, and Stuart.

The last portion will include histories of the following places: Arbor Hill, Avondale, Berea, Fisk, Gilead, Hebron, Holidays (also known as Holaday’s, Louck’s Grove, and Wahtahwah), Howe, Lieth City, Lemont, Linwood, McKinley, Nanito, Prussa, Rosserdale, Stanzel, and Zion.
